Westbourne Primary School

School Meals

All of our meals are prepared and cooked each day by our dedicated Westbourne in-house catering team. The catering team work hard to ensure they are serving meals that the children will enjoy.

Each day we offer a choice of two main meals; one of which will be a vegetarian option.

Please find a copy of the Summer Dinner menu below, which will run till October Half Term 2023.

Any child in Reception, Y1 and Y2 is entitled to a free school lunch each day funded by the Government.

Children in  Y3, Y4, Y5 and Y6 are also currently  entitled to a free school lunch each day funded by The Mayor of London.

Changes to Free School Meals from September 2026

From the start of the 2026/2027 academic year the DfE are planning to introduce new eligibility criteria for Free School Meals, and the following changes will apply:

  • There will be a targeted FSM entitlement for families in receipt of, Universal credit (provided they have a household income of no more that £7,400), or the guaranteed element of the Pension Credit, or support under part VI of the immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • There will be an expanded FSM entitlementforfamily’sreceiving Universal Credit with a household income of over £7,400 a year
  • Transitional protection will end –this means those children who have been receiving Free School Meals who no longer qualify under the above benefits willstop receiving these
  • AllFree School Meal eligibility must be rechecked annually –this will take place in the June to September period

New government rules mean this eligibility must be rechecked every summer.

We would like all our  families to make an application from the beginning of June even if you do not think you are eligible. This will:

  • Enable schools to record if a family is eligible for targeted free school meals (or ‘expanded’ free school meals (which schools are required to register, though doesn’t provide the same benefits to schools or families)
  • Ensure eligibility can be rechecked annually without a new application having to be made
  • Enable anyone not currently eligible to have their eligibility automatically rechecked periodically – this means if your circumstances change and you become eligible you will not need to reapply in the future

Please complete the application form on the London Borough of Sutton website:

https://www.sutton.gov.uk/-/free-school-meals-and-pupil-premium-eligibility-and-how-to-apply

If you have already applied and been eligible for free school meals

If you have applied in the past and are currently eligible, we may already hold your data. We will recheck this automatically in the summer months, even if you do not complete a new application form and we will inform the school of the outcome under the new criteria.

All pupils in Sutton Infant and Primary Schools are eligible for a funded school meal through the DfE Infant Meals Scheme and the Mayor of London Junior Meals Scheme. This is separate to Free School Meals eligibility, and we would urge all parents to check their eligibility for this as requested above.

If your child qualifies for targeted free school meals your school may receive extra funding called Pupil Premium. This extra money is used by the school to support eligible children. Information about Pupil Premium is available on school websites.

Families eligible for targeted free school meals may also receive access to free holiday activities and meals through Sutton Council’s Holiday Activities and Food programme Sutton summer of holiday fun, food and activities - sutton.gov.uk

Auto-Enrolment for Free School Meals

The London Borough of Sutton is participating in a project called ‘auto-enrolment for free school meals. This allows councils to use benefits data it holds to try and identify resident families who may qualify for targeted or expanded free school meals, without an application form being necessary. This project will run throughout the year.

If you are identified through this project, and you haven’t already made an application, we will write to you to ask if you are happy for us to check your eligibility and notify your school of the outcome. You will be able to opt-out of these checks when we write to you. If you are happy for us to check on your behalf, we can continue to run checks throughout your child’s schooling in Sutton. Anyone not currently eligible will have their details automatically rechecked periodically – this means if you become eligible you will not need to reapply in the future.
