Physical Education
Physical Education (P.E.) plays a huge role in the development of children at Westbourne Primary School; each child improves their social, physical and emotional well-being within their lesson time. At Westbourne our philosophy is: ‘we learn to move’ to ‘move we learn’; being active helps each child explore a range of skills that are tailored the child’s needs. Westbourne puts a huge emphasis on enjoyment in a safe and secure setting within Physical Education and ensures that each and every child actively enjoys their lesson time. The current curriculum is extensive, detailed and varied to give the child the best possible learning environment and start to their active life.
As a result of this wealth of initiatives, the school gained its 5th consecutive Gold Kitemark in 2018 as recognition of its outstanding PE and Sport provision. Last year, we were awarded the Platinum School Games Mark - the first school (Primary or Secondary) to have achieved it in Sutton and is valid for two years! In 2019-2020, we have also been awarded our ‘Virtual Games Mark’
The school has continued to increase it whole-school participation in active sport even further engaging with the ‘Get Active Programme’, an evidence-based, three-part programme led by an Olympic/GB Athlete to educate and motivate staff, children and parents about the benefits of being active and its positive impact on healthy lifestyles and achievement. The programme is based on research conducted over the past 10+ years, showing the significant importance of physical activity in brain development, and - as a result - the strong link between physical fitness and academic.
