Happy Summer Term!
Miss Hudson and Mrs Tang
We hope you have had a lovely Easter break filled with lots of chocolate eggs! This term we are going to have great fun with our new topic, Ocean Adventures! We have been so impressed with how far the children have come this year already, and we hope to use this term to consolidate our Year 1 curriculum knowledge in order to prepare them for Year 2.
As part of our topic we will be looking at the life of pirates (focusing on famous pirates such as Blackbeard and Anne Bonny), singing sea shanties and learning about the continents and oceans. We will also be looking at holidays around the world and learning about different travel destinations. Additionally, we will be comparing British seaside holidays from the Victorian period with seaside holidays today. The children will also be exploring under the sea! In Art we will be creating starfish clay models and making paper-plate jellyfish.
In literacy, the children will continue to work on using their Year 1 writing tool-kit to form more complex sentences. They will be writing stories and poems about Pirates and the seaside, and they will even make their own brochures about different holiday destinations.
In numeracy, the children are deepening their understanding of place value and number through different play-based and formal activities. They will also be exploring multiplication, division, money and time. Your child may find it helpful to become more familiar with these concepts at home. It is particularly helpful to see the real-life context for money and time in everyday life; even just pointing out o’clock and half past times as they occur in the mornings/evenings can help children to notice a pattern.
Reading books and word lists will be changed on a Monday and sent home every evening from Tuesday onwards each week. Please read with your child and write a short comment 4 times a week in their reading record. As before, these comments can be about their school books or books from home. Please continue to practise all of the sounds in the back of their reading records to reinforce these.
Spellings will be changed on a Friday and sent home in your child’s green spelling book. This book can be kept at home and returned on the following Friday. We will have a spelling test on Friday to see how your child is getting on.
Education City will continue this term, with new tasks coming out every Monday. This is an additional voluntary activity to help reinforce learning through the week. If your child does not have access to a computer please speak to your child’s class teacher.
Please make sure that your child’s clothing is named, including PE kit and plimsoles.
During the Summer term, the weather can be very hot so please ensure that your child is prepared with a named sunhat and sunglasses if necessary. They will also need to have sun-cream applied in the morning if the weather is very hot for that day.
End of the Day
If you need to discuss anything with teachers at the end of the school day, please wait until all children have been collected by their parents.
At the end of this term, the children will be going on a trip to Littlehampton! The dates will be confirmed shortly and a letter sent out as promptly as possible. The children will be allowed to wear home clothes for this trip, and we advise wearing skirts or shorts (if the weather is looking sunny) as we like to go paddling in the sea!
