Reception - Avon Class

Welcome to Avon Class!

December 2020

We have had an amazing first term in Reception.

The children are all enjoying the routine of school and have made a great start in phonics. We have just finished phase 2 and the children are amazing us with their reading and writing.

We have done so much this term, from settling in, learning about each other and our school, Westbourne to Diwali and the Christmas story. The children have learnt about shapes and numbers in Maths and how to write their names and retell a story in Literacy. All this and so much art, creativity and even P.E! Such busy children.

Next term we will be looking at Traditional tales and Nursery rhymes. The children will enjoy a drama workshop and begin the next phonics phase. We will learn about addition and subtraction and numbers to 10 and beyond.

Over the Christmas break we would like to ask you to help your child become more independent with putting on and zipping up their coats, tidying up, taking care over toys and games and recognising their names. Keep up the good work with the reading and phonics practice and enjoy the time with your families.

Have a lovely break and we look forward to seeing you in 2021.

October 2020

We cannot believe we have been back in school for half a term already! The children have all settled beautifully and are following routines and making friends. We have really enjoyed getting to know them and watching them explore the classroom.

This half term, we have been focusing on our word ‘Belonging’, allowing the children to have a chance to settle into school and explore their surroundings. The children have been reading the story ‘The Colour Monster’ and exploring different feelings and emotions. We have enjoyed Autumn walks in the school grounds, looking at the changes around us and exploring seasonal changes using our senses. We collected Autumn treasure and created art work inspired by the artist Andy Goldsworthy.

Next half term, we are excited to start Phonics. We will have daily carpet sessions teaching the children the phonics sounds and letter formations and they will be beginning to learn the skills needed for early reading. Each week, we will update the Seesaw pages with the sounds we are learning so that you can practise them with your child at home. As the children become more confident, we will share word lists and then reading books for your child to practise blending sounds and reading words.

In Maths, we are introducing number, the numerals and concept of number. The children will enjoy investigating different numbers and the ways to make them. We will look at pattern and shape too!

We will learn about light and dark, the Diwali festival and other celebrations leading up to Christmas. We will continue learning about ourselves and exploring the idea of ‘Belonging’.

Over the half term break, please help your child become more independent by getting them to practise putting on their own coat, hat and gloves, recognising and writing their name and using a knife and fork to eat independently.

Thank you so much for working with us to help your children settle into Westbourne so well. Have a lovely half term holiday.

Reception class update: August 2020

We are looking forward to welcoming you into your Reception classes in September. There’s not long to go now and we are getting very excited about meeting you all!

Due to current government guidelines, we have had to make some changes to the way we will be welcoming you and your child into school.

Stay and Play Sessions

These will still take place although unfortunately, we will not be able to invite parents into the school building.

Your date and time for the visit remains the same but please note that these visits will only last for half an hour. Please stay close to the school during your child’s visit in case they become upset or unsettled and use the time to take any relevant paperwork to the school office.

As we will not have the opportunity to talk with parents on these days, the class teachers are looking forward to having a chat with you via phone calls during the first week in September when they will discuss any relevant information they should know about your child. It will also give you the opportunity to tell the staff anything about your child that will help them settle. Please note that the phone call will come from a private number.

We hope you are all enjoying the summer break and we look forward to welcoming you to Westbourne in September.

Hello everyone!

We are so excited that you will be joining Westbourne and are looking forward to meeting you very soon. We would normally invite our new Reception parents to a welcome meeting in July but unfortunately, due to the Covid 19 pandemic, we are unable to do that this year. Instead, please take a look at the information on this page which we would normally have shared with you at the meeting.

By now, you should have received a letter giving times and dates for our ‘Stay and Play’ sessions along with your child’s date to start school.

Please note that these dates might have to change depending on the government advice we are given regarding the opening of schools in September. We will contact you if these dates have to change.

‘Stay and Play’ sessions give you and your child the opportunity to meet the staff, other children and parents. It also allows you and your child to spend time playing together in the new learning environment. This year, we won’t be making home visits, so these sessions will also be used for us to find out more information about your child, their needs and interests.

We would be very grateful if you could fill in the ‘All about Me’ booklet below and bring it with you to your child’s ‘stay and play’ session, thank you
