Tyne Class Year 4


Welcome to Tyne Class!

Happy New Year and thank you for all the lovely Christmas presents and cards. This letter is to remind you about life in Year 4, as well as to suggest how you can continue to support your child in school.

This term’s topic is RAGING RIVERS! We will be learning about rivers in the United Kingdom and other major rivers throughout the world. The children will learn key geographical vocabulary and processes, as well as human uses of rivers over time.

Homework- Spellings, Times Tables and Reading

Reading will continue as per last term, with 6 reads per week (3 with an adult, 3 from your child). We would like to thank you for your continued support in encouraging your child to read at home. It has been great to see that their comments are becoming more detailed and they are starting to justify their opinion regarding the text they have read. We’d like to continue to encourage this, as well as promoting reading books from a range of different genres. This will continue to help broaden the children’s reading experiences.

Please ensure that the ‘Big Books’ are being returned back to school. We have a limited number of each book per class. If your child is not enjoying the book, we are happy for them to exchange it for an alternative.  

The Learn Its (42 addition and times tables questions) scores have really improved during the Autumn Term and we are aiming for a similar improvement this term! Please assist your child in learning these each week so they are known at speed. We would also like to remind you of the National Curriculum expectations of your child knowing all of the times tables (up to 12 x 12) by the end of Year 4 - Rehearsing the ones they are not as confident with will be really beneficial to them.

We will also continue with our ‘Written Arithmetic’ every Friday. The sheets will be sent home regularly so that you can see your child’s progress.

There are also optional pieces of homework which the children can access online. This is based on Education City activities . (The children can be given login details if they have forgotten them.)


Just a reminder that the children should have their headphones in every day to be able to access our computer learning programmes successfully.

Also, a reminder about labelled clothing (including plimsolls) and suitable outdoor PE kit for the winter months as well as suitable kit for indoor PE.

Our spelling test will take place on a Friday and reading records are also due on a Friday.

PE Days

Kennet – Thursday and Friday.

Wandle – Thursday and Swimming every Friday until 8th March 2019.

Tyne – Tuesday (Basketball) and Thursday.


Sayers Croft

We are looking forward to our visit to Sayers Croft in the first week back after the Easter holidays. This will take place from Wednesday 24th April to Friday 26th April. Later in the term we will notify you about a parents’ meeting. This will give you the information you need about your child’s first residential school trip – we are all very excited!
