Ribble Class Year 1

Welcome to Ribble Class!

Welcome to Ribble Class!

We hope you had a wonderful Summer and that you are looking forward to the year ahead as much as we are!

For the first few weeks this term we will be exploring the topic “All About Me” which will give us a chance to get to know one another as well as learning more about ourselves. Later on in the term we will be learning all about the animal kingdom including mini-beasts and polar animals.

In Literacy this year we will be strengthening our reading by revising our Jolly Phonics sounds from Reception and also learning some brand new sounds. Whilst delving into many varied fiction and non-fiction texts, we will also look at developing our handwriting and sentence construction as we write our own pieces.

In Numeracy we are exploring shape, time, money, measurement and number work. It will be vital for the children to know how to count to 20 and back. The children will also be learning their number bonds to 10 and 20 as well as their 2x, 3x, 5x and 10x tables. These are things which they love to show off as often as possible at home!

A Few Reminders

Drop off and collection

Please remember to arrive at school promptly between 8.45am and 8.55am ready for registration at 9am. Collection is at 3pm so please be there ready to collect your child so that we can clear the front entrance before other classes come out. Thank you for your help and consideration.

P.E. Kit

We have a P.E. session every week so please make sure you have a named P.E. kit in school for these sessions.

Reading

The children’s reading records and books will be sent home every evening for your child to have a chance to practise with you on a regular basis. Please may the record and book be brought back into school every day so that we may also read with your child in school.

Each week your child will be given the opportunity to select a book from the reading corner or from our Year 1 reading library. This book is one that your child will have chosen independently. They are intended to be shared and enjoyed at home.

Our aim this year is to have 4 parent comments in the children’s reading records each week in order to encourage reading as a regular activity. This can be a comment about their reading book or a library book.

Headphones

Please bring in a named set of headphones to be worn for ICT lessons. These can be left in the children’s trays.

Nuts

Please make sure you check that your child is not bringing nuts, or anything containing/contaminated by nuts into school.

Peek at Our Week

As we transition into Year 1, we will be sending home a weekly Peek at Our Week sheet on Fridays. This will give you information about our learning this week as well as an idea of what we will be learning the following week. You will be able to see what your child has enjoyed the most so that you have a chance to discuss this with them at home. There will also be a section for you to feedback any thoughts on how your child is settling into Year 1, or to allow your child to write down any thoughts. This last part of the sheet can be detached and sent back into school for your child to read. We hope this helps you to have a clearer idea about their school day and to help us build up a picture of how your child is feeling as they make that tricky transition into a very different year group.
