We hope that you had a great Easter break and enjoyed the lovely glimpses of sunshine that we had! We would like to thank you for your fantastic support so far this year. We are looking forward to our last successful and productive term in Derwent Class!
This term our topic will be ‘Ancient Greece’ and the children are already very excited to learn all about it! It will include locating the era on a timeline, comparisons between then and now, learning about their Gods, the Olympic Games and of course, writing their own myth! We will also be learning about the legacy of Ancient Greece, making temples and creating Greek pots.
We will continue to work hard on developing Literacy and Maths skills. Please try to make sure your child reads on a regular basis at home, sharing the experience if you can. ‘Reading Record’ books will continue to be sent home weekly for you to make three comments about their reading at home. We also expect the children to make three comments of their own every week and the books will be collected in every Friday. It would be great to see the children adding even more detail to their comments by expressing their own opinions about their reading material. Please ensure that their reading record is in school every day. It is also of great importance that the children work on learning their weekly spellings and times tables (at speed) at home too. These will also be tested on a Friday. A spelling book will be sent home every Friday and the children must write out their spellings twice in their books. These will also be collected every Friday. The benefits of children using Spellodrome at home have been clearly shown.
Education City activities will be given for the children to complete in accordance with our topics. We encourage the children to use the programme at home to help with their learning and it’s a good way for you to be able to see your child’s progress. Your child should bring home their Arithmetic Tests and Learn Its. Please spend time going through the problems and allowing them time to explain their reasoning along with working on the Learn Its, taking into consideration the 100 seconds completion time.
In Science, we will be learning about forces and their effects. We will also be extending the children’s knowledge of plant and animal habitats.
Our drumming lessons will continue with Inspire Works. This term we will learn how to play Steel pans instruments! We will be holding our final drumming concert towards the end of term.
Please ensure that all uniform is named and that children have indoor plimsolls to change in to during the school day. They also need a named PE kit (white t-shirt and blue school shorts) every Tuesday and Friday. Please ensure that your child has suitable clothing (including trainers) as we will sometimes have our PE sessions outside. Children will also need headphones to be able to access the RM Easimaths programme as well as Spellodrome.
We would like to remind the children that jewellery (other than stud earrings) and nail varnish are not permitted in school.
