Picture 1

April 2017 - Summer Term

Welcome Back to Cherwell Class!

Miss Ball and Mrs Kaspersen

We hope you have had a lovely Easter break filled with chocolate eggs! Over the year so far the children have grown so much and come so far. This term we are going to have great fun with our new topic, Holidays and Seasides!

As part of our topic we will be looking at holidays around the world and learning about different travel destinations. We will also be comparing British seaside holidays from the Victorian period with seaside holidays today. As well as Holidays and Seasides, the children will also be exploring under the sea! In Art we will be looking primarily at the artist Laurel Burch and creating starfish pictures in the style of her work.

In Literacy the children will continue to work on sounding out sentences independently in their work. They will be writing stories and poems about the seaside and they will even make their own holiday brochures about different holiday destinations.

In Numeracy the children are deepening their understanding of place value and number through different play-based and formal activities. They will also be exploring measurements, money and time.

Homework

Reading books and word lists will be changed on a Monday and sent home every evening each week. Please read with your child and write a short comment 6 times a week in their reading record. As before, these comments can be about their school books or books from home. Please continue to practise all of the sounds in the back of their reading records to reinforce these.

Spellings will be changed on a Friday and sent home in your child’s green spelling book. This book can be kept at home and returned on the following Friday. We will have a spelling test on Friday to see how your child is getting on.

Education City will continue to focus on Phonics and Maths tasks this term. Your child has their own username and password which has been sent home in a letter but please let us know if you need another copy. Every Monday we will add a piece of homework that your child can complete using their log in details. If your child does not have access to a computer please speak to your child’s class teacher.

Clothing

Please make sure that your child’s clothing is named, including PE kit and plimsoles.

During the Summer term the weather can be very hot so please ensure that your child is prepared with a named sunhat and sunglasses if necessary. They will also need to have sun-cream applied in the morning if the weather is very hot for that day.

End of the Day

If you need to discuss anything with teachers at the end of the school day, please wait until all children have been collected by their parents.

Secondly, a kind reminder that pick up is at 3pm. Please be there promptly to collect your child.

Happy New Year - Welcome Back!

Welcome back! We hope you had a lovely Christmas and we would like to say a huge thank you for the wonderful presents and cards we received at the end of last term. It was very generous and they are all very much appreciated.

Topics

This term we have two exciting topics to cover. For the first half of term we will be learning about Dinosaurs! We will be writing instructions for how to trap a dinosaur! We will also be reading the Julia Donaldson story ‘Tyrannosaurus Drip’ as part of our fiction work. In Numeracy for this half of term we will be learning about money, time and data handling as well as continuing work with number and place value.

After half term we will be learning about Fairy Tales! This is a great opportunity to read plenty of different fairy tales with your children at home, looking at what similar features there are between them. In Numeracy we will be continuing to focus on counting, reading and writing numbers confidently to 100 as well as on addition and subtraction.

September 2016

Welcome to Cherwell Class!

Welcome to Year 1!

We hope you had a wonderful Summer and that you are looking forward to the year ahead as much as we are!

For the first few weeks this term we will be exploring the topic “All About Me” which will give us a chance to get to know one another as well as learning more about ourselves. Later on in the term we will be looking at several different exciting topics including the Jungle, Magic and Minibeasts.

In Literacy this year we will be strengthening our reading by revising our Jolly Phonics sounds from Reception and also learning some brand new sounds. Whilst delving into many varied fiction and non-fiction texts, we will also look at developing our handwriting and sentence construction as we write our own pieces.

In Numeracy we are exploring shape, time, money, measurement and number work. It will be vital for the children to know how to count to 20 and back. The children will also be learning their number bonds to 10 and 20 as well as their 2x, 5x and 10x tables. These are things which they love to show off as often as possible at home!

A Few Reminders

Drop off and collection

Please remember to arrive at school promptly between 8.45am and 8.55am ready for registration at 9am. Collection is at 3.05pm so please be there ready for 3pm so that we can clear the front entrance before other classes come out. Thank you for your help and consideration.

P.E. Kit

We have a P.E. session every Wednesday so please make sure you have a named P.E. kit in school for these sessions.

Reading

The children’s reading records and books will be sent home every evening for your child to have a chance to practise with you on a regular basis. Please may the record and book be brought back into school every day so that we may also read with your child in school.

Each week your child will be given the opportunity to select a book from the reading corner. This book is one that your child will have chosen independently. They are intended to be shared and enjoyed at home.

Our aim this year is to have 6 parent comments in the children’s reading records each week in order to encourage reading as a regular activity. This can be a comment about their reading book or a library book.

Headphones

Please bring in a named set of headphones to be worn for ICT lessons. These can be left in the children’s trays. If you left any from Reception, these will have been handed on to us so please do not worry about sending in another pair.
